I've never really studied the topic, but just in passing I've heard some social science academics mention that there's a lot of support for the idea that "straight" and "gay" do not exist like a lightswitch; one or the other, but rather that sexual orientation is a wide-ranging spectrum that we all have our own place on.

The truth is human beings are by and large a domesticated species. And as such we are conditioned to do a great many things that are contrary to our overall programming in order to conform to the social order that is imposed on humanity. The trick is to develop a society that complements the true nature of human beings, rather than trying to promote some ridiculously idealistic fairy tale in an effort to instill some sort of moralistic code in general society and wondering "why doesn't it work and why are all of these acts of violence happening over and over?"
