if owning guns is illegal, only outlaws will have guns, as the saying goes; gun control just takes away guns from law abiding citizens, it doesn't take guns away from criminals
further, i do not agree, necessarily, that criminal record = removal of guns. depends on crime and it should be more like probation (it should expire). why not just execute them right from the get go if we think that no criminal can make amends. in terms of "mental illness" i think it could be construed to force people to give up their rights and they would not hurt anyone. further it's a major invasion of privacy. and yet, it's the thing that is the cause of these unfortunate incidents. so the question is really, in the end, how much you want to allow the government to know about your health and if they can judge you and "remove rights" from you because of their judgement (even if you have done nothing wrong)
