Let's see...in a thread about fixing our educational system, we are having an argument about...Russia.

That says a lot.

What our country needs yesterday is a Rebirth of Antiquity. That would solve a lot of our problems. However, the odds of our society shifting towards anything other than instant gratification and self-righteousness is about the same as me winning the mega-millions lotto.

Ergo, the solution lies with a more immediate transition into a nanny state since our populace is incapable of policing itself.

By rebirth of antiquity are you meaning one that emphasizes classics, literacy, and philosophy?

I think one of the most staggering issues is a lack of education in computing. So many new jobs expect graduates to at least be familiar with spreadsheets, HTML, and basic web design. All of this talk about a technical pathway is well-intended, and I think it's a fair approach if it's implemented for juniors and seniors (not at middle school), but knowledge about computing would definitely be an improvement for many.
