Huntsman Nails It Concerning the Current GOP

Indy, I'm not changing the form of the government at all. It is still a republic. In fact, I'm not even amending the constitution. All I'm changing is the way states choose their electors (six months before election day), suggesting a method those electors can use to decide who to vote for (i.e. asking the candidates tough, intellectual questions), and letting those electors vote their conscience and based on their own judgement who they think should be President. I think this would solve a lot of our country's problems.

Actually that's an interesting idea, although you're suggesting that electors get to decide who becomes the candidate instead of the people?

So is it: electors choose the candidate, who the people then vote on?

Or: people choose the electors, who then choose the candidate, who the people then vote on?

I dunno man, that sounds like taking the votes of hundreds of millions and concentrating it into the hands of... a few?

Plus, I would argue that the message is never more "dumbed down" than it is in... primaries. Look at who the GOP primary candidates were--if you think Romney was bad, they were an all-time joke. So I'm not sure this solves the "dumb" problem.

And while I sympathize with the "idiots out there" lament that is U.S. elections, I thought this year actually gave us hope, in that the electorate said "Oh, hell no!" finally to the idiocy that has been the GOP for years now, and their hollow, scare-mongering, race-baiting tactics. Granted Obama is no prize but clearly Americans are changing in what they'll tolerate.

In other words, I'm not sure the lowest common denominator works anymore. There will always be dumb people and there's nothing you can do about that, but I think we saw a change this year.

yes but we have representative democracy when we do much of anything. like pass a law. you vote for a congressman who then acts as a trustee and passes laws for his constituents. how is this different?

I think when you're suggesting that people only get to elect "candidates" and then some other group of people whom we did not vote on gets to pick which one is president... that's what the Constitution set up? Show me.
