i mean, the guy robbed 7 banks while on parole for previous crime(s)
the number is eye popping, but its not even like it was his 2nd strike
it was his 2nd, 3rd, 4th, .... 8th strike
so while the number is high, its only symbolic
1,256 years for robbing banks

I understand how prosecutors operate. A friend of mine is a defense attorney.
A paradox has been created in the justice system. There just is not enough time in the Universe to take every criminal to trial. Trials are expensive and time consuming. So the plea process has been created to eliminate the need for long expensive trials. But the plea process resulted in criminals getting shorter sentences and lesser penalties than if they went to trials.
This result pissed off prosecutors and victims, and so now DA's try to front load as many charges as they can on a criminal in the knowledge that many of those charges will be reduced or dropped during the plea process. The hope is that the crook will end up serving as much time as he should have were he to have gone to trial.
So now crooks are going to jail for long periods of time without the benefit of a trial.
This is not an optimal situation.
What's the solution?
Education, as usual.
If you solve poverty, you solve crime.
