Well that's a no-brainer. But it's not an either/or proposition.

It's probably a combination of both.

One argument I hear all the time is "Gun laws aren't followed by criminals anyway so what's the point--you're just victimizing law-abiding people."

Problem with that is: in almost all these massacres, this is their first offense and/or they had no criminal record. So that line of reasoning fails.

And the fact that criminals are so easily able to get such a variety of firearms tells me that either a) the laws we have aren't sufficient or b) they're not being enforced properly. I mean... obviously.

The issue of gun violence and gun control is very complex. The one thing that bothers me about this is the fact that some in the government are contemplating blanket solutions which is problematic as we are seeing.

Attacking the availability of certain types of weapons is one approach some are pursuing but it again appears to be a simplistic approach that will probably not solve the problem. The recent shootings are the actions of a few and statistically a very small percentage of the masses. One could argue the same thing about welfare. Should drastic actions be taken against all people receiving welfare based on the actions of some that abuse it? That argument has been brought up by the right and yet the left argues that it's wrong to punish all because of the actions of a few. Both sides will defend their cash cows.

It is tragic that some people pick up a gun and decide to commit mass murder but the solution isn't to punish (I use that term loosely ok?) everyone else. That is what gun owners feel about it and rightly so. Knee-jerk reactions serve no useful purpose other than self-serving political motives.

The converse of that is why should your desire to own an AR-15 with a 30-round mag trump my right to not be murdered because I can't possibly outrun you with weaponry like that?

All so you can have that kind of weaponry... for what, exactly?
