i think WELL REGULATED (f**k you conservatives it's in the constitution) militias is a good compromise. actually i think it's my preferred solution. i find it hard to believe that the second amendment was made to justify the owning of hunting weapons AND military hardware under the idea that individuals, not organized groups, could/would oppose a tyrannical government or invading army. the current interpretation of the law, despite everyone's love of "what the founders thought" is REALLY really far from what i would imagine they intended.
