I have no qualms with American foreign policy trying to legitimately be a humanitarian force in the world both to win us allies and because it's just an ethical imperative:
- Tsunami incidents. Drop off food, basic medicine, etc. Help local police restore order if the country requests our assistance.
- If a political entity starts to commit genocide, put pressure on them. Start off diplomatic, then provide financial support to opposing factions if the CIA determines they would be a smaller thread (that's the whole point of their existence), etc.
- Provide a strong military presence in common economic trade routes.
It's not all black or white. I wish our country would adopt a policy of 'Do Good.' We don't need to be everywhere, but only because our presence everywhere signifies we're doing some questionable things. Hardcore isolationism outside of capitalist networks is just dumb. Other countries offered us economic assistance after Katrina. If the UK or Canada experienced a natural disaster, we shouldn't just be silent bedfellows.
