yep. not only is it more moral to do, at least in new york i'm pretty sure if you just start firing rounds off at an intruder like that you're likely to get charged with something.

That is just smart self-defense in a nutshell. If a person is not capable of staying rational upon encountering danger, it is irresponsible for them to own a gun. You do have the right to defend yourself, but that self defense must be proportionate, and it must account for the very real safety issues inherent in firing a weapon.
