i think it depends on what you use a baseline

i use complete destitution/death as the worst case scenario for how my life could turn out

so yea maybe youre being overworked at 80 hours/wk for some salary, unfairly and you might get fired if you complain

well then still, quit and get a different job

if you were making a decent starting salary you are likely at least competent enough to be a manager at some fast food restaurant for at least 16-18$/hr

maybe you have to move into an apartment or something and downgrade your lifestyle, but you wouldnt actually die if you quit that job thats too stressful

and you get like 99 weeks of unemployment to keep food on the table if you want to hold out a while for something else thats better than fast food

so yea, if you dont like it, then quit.

I don't think any employment contract should allow for "indefinite work hours." There should be a specified limit. Employers don't want this because it opens up the subject to negotiations, union activism, and other things, but tough luck. Like someone else said, an employer couldn't just say "to be determined" on pay.

If an employer wants the law firm to be 24/7, then hire lawyers and say that the maximum work week is 70 hours. Show employees what they're actually making. It's not much better than wages.
