QOL is subjective in a sense that it depends on where. Do people in China feel their QOL is better that it was in the past? Russia? Iran? Some shithole in Africa?

People all too often see it subjectively as it relates to them. Is my quality of life better than it was for my parents? Yes in some ways and no in others but overall I'd say yes. I have access to comforts my parents didn't. I agree that creature comforts are only a part of QOL. There are other factors we could debate I'm sure.

depends on what culture and what period of time you're referring to. comparisons of the present and the past often seem to go immediately to the dark ages of europe for some reason as if that's the only time period all of humanity lived in before the 20th century

Sure QOL is defined by each person. It's "subjective" in that way, if that's how you want to look at it. But to surrender the ability to look at human progression over the course of hundreds of years and marvel at its advancement in every field, and then objectively look at how that advancement has affected our lives, is just silly.
