I see this has devolved into a typical us vs. them gun argument which papers over the whole point of the OP: that the NRA and their cronies are playing a game by de-fanging the ATF, and then when pressed they disingenuously claim all we need to do is let the ATF do its job (it's the whole "laws on the books" fallacy). And, as pointed out, the restrictions put on the ATF are absurd.

And I'm supposed to go along with this ridiculous shell game?

OK, but the NRA and their friendly congressional cronies are pointing to them as evidence that we don't need to revise any gun laws because they've got the situation under control.

So... are they just unaware that they're completely unhelpful or is that not the point in the first place?

Not sure how talking about how they suck or are "fascists" addresses the issue.

I believe the country lost confidence in ATF after what happened in Waco and Ruby Ridge. Whether some people tried to justify it, the public overall became outraged.

If they suck then they should be replaced.

If they aren't doing what they're supposed to do because they've been hamstrung by pro-gun advocates, then it points to the real agenda here by them: to really have no meaningful control over guns and ammo in this country.

And even if you're the biggest 2nd amendment fan, having a free-for-all doesn't really serve anybody now, does it? Except those profiting.

But you understand--feelings about ATF aside?--that having an agency supposedly enforcing laws that is underfunded, understaffed and hampered by crazy restrictions... isn't really having an agency enforcing laws?

Nobody has guessed the dual instance where this goes on here too in this country, BTW.
