I'll let people read it and decide for themselves, it sounds like he appreciated most peoples serious misgiving's with the church better than anyone else i've heard in its hierarchy. One would hope the leadership of the catholic church would listen.

Chances of that however, I don't rate very highly. I can only see them pursing their closed ranked strategy of disastrously public opinion ignorant defences of their own organisations frankly, criminal failings and continue to go on the offensive on moral issues. Why, thinking your the rest of humanities hotline to god has that funny effect on people.

Only "200 years behind"? Oh Cardinal..........don't be so modest. You guys are WAY more behind than that.

I love how people give certain priests and church officials so much credit for being so "progressive" when all they're doing is flipping rampant child rape into a positive by claiming that, "hey, at least it helped us re-examine our priorities!" Really? That's what you came away from all that with? A glimmer of hope that your criminal organization can dust itself off and get back in the good graces of the unwashed? Miss me with that nonsense. According to the article, even when he "criticized" the Vatican's stance on birth control, he only did so because it drove the faithful away. Not because it, you know, demonstrably ruined the lives of the faithful who actually listened. He's not speaking truth to power. He's a PR man listing his pitch failures. Unless this guy threw down his gold-tinged robes and pissed on them on the steps of the Apostolic Palace, he hasn't "spoken out" enough for my taste.
