Considering the night was September 11th, the President was probably spending time with families who lost someone during Sept 11th, 2001 attack and told his staff not to bother him with minor things like embassy protests. Or if you're a Republican, he was probably out celebrating the event.
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.

Hmm, that does seem strange.
Obviously I'd prefer to have military officials making the detailed decisions on the ground, but the precident should at least be in contact for updates and major decisions.
Still, that's a relatively minor issue, compared to the real questions of why it happened, who did it, and how future event like this can be avoided.
