Actually, I think I misunderstood the issue at first

I have no problem with requiring drivers to keep their car in a safe condition,

But random checkpoints where you have to stop, whether or not there's a reason to believe that something's wrong, so that a cop can inspect your car, is an issue.

Cops here frequent the stores like Walmart and Target and watch people pulling in/out of the parking lots. They'll flag you over if they spot anything like expired tags or broken head/tail lights. Its usually when they are pushing for quotas at the beginning/end of the month. One cop flags, 3-4 write tickets.

Personally, it makes me hate cops even more when they pull crap like this because all they are doing is generating revenue, not protecting the public.

You should get a warning on your first offense at least. I've been oblivious to my license plate light being out. Why should I be fined for something I have no control over?

It's also a bogus way of doing a DUI/possession stop, as enyon hinted at.

I hate having any light burned out. I wish there would be a notification on the dash advising a light is out. It's hard to check the breaks by yourself. And a light could burn out at any time, so it may be out for a while before you check them next.

a number of cars have had marker light outage alerts on the dash, my 1974 volvo had em... but i don't know how reliable
