Here there is a limit to paid sick days one can take. It's no different to holiday pay. it's part of the employment package, and high quality workers gravitate to companies which look after them.
If you are sick longer than the allotted 5 or 7 days per annum, you usually go unpaid but are unlikely to lose your job if you can show the illness is genuine. If it is genuine and debilitating, you will end up being compensated by the government health insurance pool, which everyone puts into.
Society looking after its stragglers or those who just got unlucky, because society requires combined strength to rightly be called society, and people usually get better and back to productivity if they get looked after.
