There's a lot of things that The British have that's a result of their colonial past. They can't just give it back. Plus, who do you give it back to? It doesn't belong to the current Indian government

It belongs to the Indian people, so you give it back to the Indian people. The Indian state will hold it in trust.
It certainly doesn't belong to some rich old lady in the UK, who keeps it locked up in her dungeon with the rest of the treasure she's looted from around the world.
