Cashiers and other minimum wage workers in retail deal with a lot more variety than their ancestors. Yeah, they may have more mechanical and digital assistance, but 40 years ago you didn't have to stock 100 types of sodas either. My grandfather recalls the first fast-food restaurants popping up in the 1970s in his town. There was basically one or two menu items; now there's chili, soup, salad, chicken fingers - in four different sizes.
And you were more likely to enjoy the benefits of unionization.
