Religions shouldering their way into marriage (and in some places actually laying claim to the entire idea, amazingly enough) is one of the nastier social problems that has developed throughout history. Civil marriage was an excellent effort towards correcting some of that, but has enough of its own problems that its not really averaging out to being a net improvement.
