Afghanistan is a complex country, historically every power that attempted to occupy it failed. We need to stop thinking in Western terms of what a country is supposed to be.

I don't know that US concepts like "liberal" or "conservative" mean anything outside of the US.

They look at our activities in the same way that we would look at people coming to us and saying football, beer, and porn are now illegal and anyone caught with engaging in these activities will be summarily executed. Do you think Americans would fight over that?

They simply don't like us telling them what to do and stealing their resources. And if takes adopting the biggest asshole religion ever conceived off to get rid of us they are going to do it.

Afghanistan in the 50's and 60's included sights such as women working in public offices and being educated, while wearing skirts. No headscarves required.

Fast forward a couple decades and everyone grew a beard and starting killing people in sports arenas.

Thats a serious oscillation in the liberal-conservative tug of war.
