I believe that we all agree that there need to be teaching standards. That children need to be taught something.
The question is, who decides? Is it the parents of the children? The community in which the children live? Or, is it some disinterested third party or a benevolent dictator?
I think it's both. There should be basic guidelines set for all children. But, the specifics should be left up to the locals.
Say that children need to be able to do algebra by 10th grade nationwide. But, if a local community says that they ALSO need to know about creationism, great.
