If the space critters ever what to make themselves known, I doubt any govt on the face of the earth can hide/stop it.

There are other possibilities as well. Perhaps a higher order intelligence that is native to earth that we just haven't become aware of yet is a possibility. ( a slight one, but who knows really?)
I agree the FTL hurdle is a difficult one to surmount. One the other hand who can say what kind of technology would be developed by a civilization that has existed for billions of years.
