Right... The completely unbiased "academics" are the ones who should be in charge of education.
Sorry, but no matter what your answer is, the only right answer to the question, "Who should decide what a child learns" is "It's parents".
When an academic pays tuition at a school, or taxes in a school district, that academic can have just as much say as anyone else.

The "people should be allowed to teach their kids to grow up stupid" is a stupid argument. The entire point of society is progress. You're arguing against the very point of human interaction for the sake of some absurd notion of righteousness.
Furthermore, your tax argument has no merit. What you teach your children in f**k, indiana affects people in Manhattan and therefore affects their taxes. So until you completely isolate, the argument fails.
