Why I genuinely support Police Officers

I put my life on the line every damn day when I go to work at my desk job in my high rise new york building. Do you know how many accountants were killed on 9/11? I don't think cops should get praise for taking risks that we all take when we go about our jobs. Not to mention the fact that unlike firefighters, who risk their lives for no reward; cops are given the POWER OF THE LAW AND OF THE STATE over their fellow citizens, despite many being less educated, more corrupt, and overall worse individuals than your average citizen. Thats a huge perk, along with openly carrying a firearm anywhere and everywhere, that makes the "risks" of their job seem tame in comparison to real dangerous jobs worthy of praise, like Firefighter or Nuclear Technician.

The problem is that cops are too well protected from the law.

I think what fstar is getting at is the overall, general aspect of what it means to be a police officer - the intention behind it - which I see as to be a peace keeper, and I do believe the majority of people who attempt to become police have this nobel cause in mind when they pursue that career.

I think part of the problem we have for such a negative outlook on police is two-fold. One, people don't like it when someone reigns them in from being an a-hole, even though they sometimes need to be. Two, the notion of "peacekeeper" has deteriorated in our society, with them simply being police now.

I think people have become more hostile to cops ever since they became militarized (due to the drug war) and developed an attitude of "us versus them", it wasn't always like that but thats the trend now, no longer are cops there to serve the people but rather they are now an occupational army that is out to enforce the law no matter how impractical it may be.

there are good cops and there are bad cops. the % of one or the other in a particular department is largely contingent on the culture of that department.
