It has little to do with the "welfare state". It has more to do with an extreme form of individuality actually. "Cultural malaise" as one guy put it. The guy who got slaughtered was british, but even more than that he was a soldier, representing and defending the entire country. However british natives have and continue to be conditioned to reject tribal identifications, so they do no see it as an attack on "their" group, except for the obvious far-right nationalists like the EDL hooligans. I'm sure they like to think it makes them superior and enlightened in some sense, instead of just decadent and complacent.
It's also ridiculously disengenuous to compare muslim immigrants to the US and muslim immigrants to Europe. Apples and oranges. The muslims that do emmigrate to the US do so because they have the money and education. They are often the "elite" of their respective communities. They can't just swim across a river and jump over a fence and presto, they're in the US.
It would make much more sense to compare it to mexican/hispanic immigration. All of a sudden you have the exact same problems emerge. That is because the hispanic immigrants are largely poor and uneducated and often don't even immigrate legally. Kind of like the muslim immigrants in europe. A simple look at the geography is enough to explain this. North Africa and certain parts of the Mid-East are Europe's Mexico, in a sense.
I know you don't get to masturbate over american exceptionality and the american "dream"(lol) when you examine it that way, but oh well.
