FWIW, I'm not convinced this would raise soda prices even a bit. Coke and Pepsi may be forced to eat the entire tax. Their prices have largely been unchanged since I was a kid, so their markup is already huge. If Coke raises the price but Pepsi doesn't, they'll lose revenues. And there will be reason for both not to move up.
When you make a good profit margin, it's hard to pass on the tax (if you could, you'd already be charging more to begin with).

Correct me if I'm wrong...but this is a point of sale tax and the consumer would be paying it, right? Twenty cents added onto a 20 oz pop. Or...maybe they'd drink a bit more water and they'd lose some sales?

Yeah the idea that a modest tax is going to dissuade people is absurd. Maybe if you doubled the price or something...

If they're truly poor they get their soft drinks for free. Uncle Sam pays the tax. Unless they want to somehow exempt this from food benefits...
15% of Cali is on food stamps, bear in mind.
I suppose it reduces their food budget all the same, in the long view...
If we want to target the poor for behavior modification, the better idea is to exempt pop from food benefits. Which is a no brainer IMO, but here we are.
